The eMAEX-System – A Three stage model of descriptive analyses

The eMAEX-system is based on a three-stage model of film analysis:

1.) The systematic identification and comparative analysis of the fundamental pathos scenes are designed to establish their degree of variation and consistency within the genre.

2.) The description of the temporal arrangement of the pathos scenes within a single film provides the basis for a comparative analysis within the larger body of the genre.

3.) The third stage comprises a systematic description of the temporal shaping of individual pathos scenes as compositions of expressive movement.

This model has been further developed into an operational system of film analysis – the eMAEX-System, which will be explained in detail in the following section.
