A black screen; the sound of an exploding bomb is heard, then the image of a Japanese flag being raised fades in. The sound object, the bomb, and the black which gradually brightens to become a cinematographic image and the beginning of the film are interwoven through the experience of seeing and hearing and become one movement.

The slow forward movement of the convoy of refugees and soldiers is portrayed as an orchestral march by means of the regular meter of slow marching music and long brass notes. Clouds of smoke, the ruins of houses and the tired bodies and faces of those marching mark a civilian society tormented by destruction. In a fluid pull-out shot, these very different individuals are framed together moving forward in the same direction with a monotonous motion, slowly, clumsily and brokenly. Injured and healthy soldiers, Philippine women and men, children and old people stagger along next to one another.
