Expressive movement unit 3

Running text that begins at the bottom of the frame, commemorating the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers of Bataan, establishes a vertical y-axis of an upwards movement. This is projected over the firing machine gun barrel that, on the level of shot composition, increasingly dissolves in a diffuse wafting fog. The abstract largess of the sacrifice is realized in this final figuration of Danes transition and loss of the appearance of being merged with the body of the machine. The visual space is defined anew. The establishment of a non-diegetic abstract space, the direction of which is delineated—alongside the wafting fog that seemingly comes out of nowhere—by the upwards movement of the text that continues above the top edge of the frame and finally creates a figuration of sublimation. The music builds to a crescendo and, parallel to the heroism evoked by the text and conveyed on the level of shot composition, discharges in a fanfare. Dane’s sublimation and its equation with the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers of Bataan mark the final point of the repetitive principle of the film’s construct as a whole.
